What is neodymium magnets?

Neodymium magnets(NdFeB magnets), also known as the “neo”magnets are made from an alloy of neodymium, iron and boron. It is a permanent magnet which is the most widely used, because it offers the highest energy of any other magnetic materials. Neodymium magnets are the strongest type of permanent magnet available commercially, so they have replaced other types of strong magnets in many applications in modern products, such as brushless DC Motor,magnetic resonance imaging, sensors and magnetic fasteners.

Because of the different manufacturing processes, we divide the neodymium magnet into two subdirectories, namely bonded NdFeB magnets and sintered NdFeB magnets.

Manufacturing Processes:

The neo powder, primary raw material is the neodymium metal, one of the rare earth elements, is melted and combined with binder, then rapidly solidified through press molding or injection molding to produce the desired bonded NdFeB magnets.

The neo powder is melted in a furnace and pressed into a mold then cooled to form ingots in magnetic field. The pressed ingots is sintered into dense block in inert gas or vacuum. Then, the blocks are heat-treated, in order to improve the coercivity of magnets, that comes to sintered NdFeB magnets.

Bonded NdFeB magnets, can be found in a variety of applications because of its precision dimension one-time forming, multipole orientation and so on. It can be made into relatively complex magnetic components. Moreover, bonded NdFeB magnets can be formed with other assorting components at one time,owing to its high mechanical strength.

Sintered NdFeB Magnets is a shape of tetragonal crystal structure. The non-metal element B plays an very important role in the formation, although the content is rare, usual is around 1%. With the help of  tetragonal Nd2Fe14B crystal structure, the compounds have high saturation magnetization, high uniaxial anisotropy and high Curie temperature.
